Norio Kobayashi's photo collection "FIRST LIGHT" expands his horizons from the redeveloped land of Tama New Town depicted in his previous work "LANDSCAPES" to include Okutama around Tokyo, Yamanashi, and the Keihin Industrial Zone in Kawasaki, and is a series of photographs taken with medium and large format cameras and on reversal film between 1985 and 1992.
This book is divided into three parts: "Transformation" depicts the state of urban development on reclaimed land and underground, "Reduction" contrasts abandoned old houses and maintained forest roads in the Okutama district, and "Memory" focuses on the night view of the industrial area along the bay. These works quietly depict the transformation of the landscape brought about by urban development and the human activities and memories behind it.
