"KAU LUNG SHING CHAI, Kowloon Walled City" is Miyamoto Ryuji's first photo book.
This is a shocking film that captures the architectural beauty of Kowloon Walled City, which became a slum in the 1980s. Originally a defensive fortress, it became an exclave of the Qing Dynasty under British rule and was illegally occupied and turned into a slum. Its maze-like alleyways, disorganized infrastructure, and densely packed houses and factories exuded a strange charm, but after the decision to return the city to China in 1997, it was demolished and turned into a park.
Includes text by architectural historian Shin Muramatsu.
