Aoudou Denzen (1748-1822), a Western-style painter of the late Edo period, was born in Sukagawa City, Fukushima Prefecture. He mastered the copperplate etching technique at the age of 47 and became active under the patronage of Matsudaira Sadanobu, the lord of Shirakawa Domain.
He produced Japan's first copperplate anatomical illustration, "Ihanteiko Naizo Copperplate Engraving," and the Edo shogunate's first world map, "Shindai Bankoku Zenzu." He was also highly acclaimed for his hand-painted oil paintings, such as his Edo Famous Places series, which incorporated Western painting techniques, and the Important Cultural Property "Mount Asama Screen."

The exhibition, the first retrospective to be held in the Tokyo metropolitan area in 17 years, was highly praised.
This is the official catalogue of the exhibition which reexamined Aodo Denzen's artistic career by displaying around 250 works, including around 140 copperplate prints, original drawings, works by contemporary artists, Western prints and works by his disciples.
