Exhibition catalogue for "Tanaka Isson: A New Complete Picture" This is the first definitive edition of the research and study of Tanaka Isson's artistic career, conducted by the museum's curators with all their might.
A unique and rich piece of content worthy of being called a comprehensive work.
Tanaka Isson (1908-1977, Japan) was born in Tochigi and lived in Chiba for 20 years before moving to Amami Oshima, where he painted Japanese paintings of subtropical plants and birds. He died anonymously without ever having the opportunity to exhibit his works in public.
After his death in the 1980s, he was featured on a television art program, which caused an unprecedented stir and made him known nationwide.
The exhibition "Tanaka Isson: A New Picture" was the first full-scale retrospective to be undertaken jointly by art museums in places associated with Isson, and was the largest exhibition to date with approximately 250 works on display, including many newly discovered materials in recent research. It examined the world of Isson's work, which had previously been told mainly about his lifetime trajectory, and sought to reveal his true image as a painter.
