Vast reclaimed land, the walls of a gigantic dam. These landscapes were captured with a large-format camera called an 8x10. The detailed depiction and distortion-free, precise image formation that only a large-format camera can provide captures every detail of the landscape. The monochrome composition, which is conscious of the horizontal and vertical, vividly depicts the volume of the structure and its relationship to the surrounding space.
In fact, the title of this photo book was originally going to be "Spots of Japan." However, due to a typing error at the printing company, it ended up being released as "Typical Japan." This title, born of an unintended coincidence, ended up going beyond individual fragments of landscapes (spots of scenery) and more strongly alluding to the structural characteristics of Japan's land, in other words, its "typology." The detailed images captured by the large-format camera further accentuate the alien presence of the landscapes that should be familiar to us.
